After reading about Rebecca's experience running a mini marathon, I'm inspired to get in shape. I haven't exercised in. . . oh. . . about 2 years. Sadly. I'm really good at coming up with excuses for not doing it.
But no more! Today I slipped on my nice new running shoes and walked to my card group. Then, I walked up the street to get Makayla from school. Then with both girls on the stroller, I jogged up a hill and walked/jogged back down the hill to our home.
Holy Cow!! My calves, thighs, butt, stomach, arms, and sides were ON FIRE! So, although my mind was loving this, my body was violently protesting.
I'm not giving up, though. I know it will be hard to begin with, but it will get easier. (Won't it? Please tell me it gets easier!) Soon I hope to be able to do more than the 1.2 miles I did today. (Don't make fun! That was a long trip for me after having been dormant for the last 2 years.)
I do have one problem, though. When I got home, I was famished! I wanted to eat everything in site--which does not do good things for my Weight Watchers diet.
My question for all you exercisers is this: how do I keep my energy up so that I don't come home and raid the fridge, thereby defeating the purpose of my diet and exercise? It seems a little pointless to go for a jog and then come home and eat 3 pieces of cake (which didn't happen today, but I can see it coming to pass).
Any advice (or encouragement) would be greatly appreciated.

I've heard it gets easier too...I started running a few months ago, but then lost my drive. I've been terrible myself at working out the last few weeks. How's Weight Watchers going?? I just reached my 40 lb mark this week! YAY!
Let me know if you hear anything good. That is exactly how I feel. Honestly I have given up the last couple of weeks. I totally need a triple stroller. Going outside would be so much nicer than staring at a cement floor!
It does get easier. Don't push yourself too hard. I'm trying to walk a mile a day this week. Next week I'll increase it. Try to do the same. :)When you get home from walking, try drinking water first and then give it 15 minutes. It may be you aren't hungry, but thirsty. Keep up the good work. You will be so glad you did! :)
i'm so glad to have inspired you, but really i had to start somewhere too. i had the same problem with being completely starving after working out. try to get protien in whenever you can that will help (i even do protien powder when i am training alot), but definitely what your mom said...drink water. i know it sounds absurd but lots of times we really are just thirsty when we think we are hungry. also make sure that you are eating food that isn't empty calories, which i'm sure you know...and try different things to see what makes you feel full longer. for me if i eat an apple by itself i almost feel hungrier that before i ate it, but if i eat it along with some nuts it makes me feel full longer. now if i could just figure out how to curb this sweet tooth of mine. good luck with your exercise. i have a fantistic quote from george s. patton "now if you are going to win any battle you have to do one thing. you have to make the mind run the body. never let the body tell the mind what to do. the body will always give up. it is always tired in the morning, noon, and night. but the body is never tired if the mind is not tired." good luck...keep me posted.
sorry about the novel
Way to go!! You are so cute! I started running when I got to college and LOVE it now...at first it was hard, and my body was also telling me NO! But, it does get better, pretty soon it will be addicting...that's what happened to me...until I got pregnant and now I have NO energy!
About eating everything when you get home...that happens to me too...I think it is normal. Drinking water is a good idea, because you are thirsty. I also learned that it is important to eat something when you get done because it helps your muscles, but find something yummy and healthy; like yogurt, string cheese, yummy fruit ...my favorite is a veggie tray with fat free ranch...SUCH a good snack. Anyway, now that I've written a novel, sorry! I get so excited about this stuff!
My husband always tells me that after you work out and you come home hungry (working out on a consistant basis) your metablism goes up and your body needs more food. So- that is why you eat more food and feel more hungry!
But for sure- Choose good things to eat for your body. :)
Best of luck!!!
I totally agree with the quote about making your mind run your body, instead of the other way around. I know that so many times I've thought I couldn't go any faster or any farther, but just recently I've been trying to see if my body can really do more than I think it can, and come to find out your mind really is a strong tool. When I tell myself I can go farther, I can. Any way, it's easy to lose motivation, so just start out easy. About the eating thing. Try eating low calorie things, like fruits and veggies. Then you still get to eat something when you're hungry, but it's not high calorie foods that defeat the purpose of working out. Drinking water is great advice too.
You need to have this in your mind "just keep swimming" That was great advice from the movie Finding Nemo. I keep that in my mind as I walk just one more block next thing you know its three blocks! I'm now up to 1.75 miles YEAH for me! You can do it!!!!!
Hhmmm. My suggestion appears to be opposite from everyone else's. I eat something before I work out that is about 100 calories like yogurt, banana, string cheese stick, 8 or 10 almonds, etc. I also drink ~12oz of water at that time (usually 20-30 minutes before I get to the gym). Sometimes I just drink 6-8 oz of skim milk instead. I drink 20-30oz during the workout then 16-32oz when I get home (well usually on the way home). I guess you'll have to do what works for you though.
